Blood sampling enables us to measure lactate concentrations and identify rider strengths and weaknesses. This information can then be used to create structured training plans to target those areas of weakness and achieve specific goals.
Many riders use a 20 minute test to approximate FTP. Whilst this is a good way to track trends in performance, it is very difficult to obtain much useful data using this method and hence training zones are often over estimated, leading to inefficient training. This overestimation, instead of improving your body’s ability to recycle lactate just makes it more able to deal with a higher concentration often leading to a plateau in performance and over training.
